Midnight Dreams

The wind blows through the trees, she stands in a meadow with the sun shining above her head as the wildflowers dance in the wind. Blues, purples, and shades of white surround her with light. She leans her head back, her eyes flutter closed, and she smiles as she feels the warmth of the sun on her face. A sense of deja vu washes over her, she’s been here before, that she is certain of… however, that feels like a lifetime ago.

It’s not the place that she misses, it’s the boy she stumbled upon the place with. The boy with the chocolate brown eyes that she could stare into for hours, his laugh echos in the rooms of her mind. Tears fill her eyes and her heart breaks as she pictures his face, a beautiful soul that died too soon. Two years have gone by and it still hurts. Her heart breaks every time she thinks of him, now she only sees him in her dreams. Here’s how the last one went.

“Hello my Angel.” She hears a voice say from behind. His voice calls to her, she turns toward the sound. It’s like music to her ears and it sets her soul on fire. She finds herself standing face to face with a handsome boy, his brown hair shines like gold in the warm glow of the fading sun. His eyes are the warmest color she has ever seen. The girl smiles as she runs toward him and throw her arms around him. Tear of joy and happiness fill her eyes as she holds on for dear life. “I’ve missed you.” The boy says softly into her ear as he pull her closer to him while taking in the familiar scent of strawberries and mint, something he has missed dearly. The girl smiles as she buries her face into his shoulder.

“I’ve missed you more than you know.” She says as she wraps her arms around the base of his neck and stares up into his eyes. The boy smiles as his heart pounds in his chest, he cups her cheek in his hand and strokes it softly with the pad of his thumb. The girl leans into his touch as her eyes flutter closed, a warm fire courses through her veins as her heart flutters in her chest.
“Believe me, I know. I’ve been watching over you like I promised I would.” He says quietly as he cups her face in his hands watching her closely with calculating eyes. The girl smiles as she stares up at him with nothing but love and happiness in her eyes.

They sit in the grass and talk happily while holding hands and cuddling, their hearts dance in their chests. It feels like a dream, a dream she never wants to wake up from. The boy watches her with a heavy heart, he hates the way she has been living her life and wants to help her move on, but at the same time he loathes seeing someone else with his girl. He sighs softly as he opens his mouth to speak, knowing the words leaving his lips are going to hurt. Who will it hurt more? He’s not sure. “I need you to do something for me.” He says wearily as he tucks a piece of her hair behind her ear causing her to stare up at him.

“Anything.” She says as she tries to read his expression, but can’t. Her head rests gently in his lap as he leans against the trunk of a large cherry blossom tree. The boy yet again allows a soft sigh to escape his lips as he gently strokes her cheek with his fingertips.
“Promise me you will let me go, I’m not saying you have to forget. But, please I can’t bare to see you so upset my Angel. I promise I will never stop watching over you, but promise me you will let go. I simply wish for you to be happy.”

A long pause is left in between his words. Words laced with concern, love, pain, and vulnerability. She stares up at him thoughtfully as the seconds turn into minutes. And with each passing minute the boy grows worried that she might forever hold onto the idea that she would never be happy or able to love ever again.

“I promise.” As these words leave her lips relief floods through the boy’s body. She realizes that this is simply for the best.

She wakes up in the dark, back in her bed she sits alone. Four red numbers burn like embers in the dark. 12:00 midnight. She sighs softly as tears fill her eyes, her eyes flutter closed as she listens to the sounds in the night, she breaths in deep. One single tear falls down her cheek. “I’ll do anything for you.” She whispers to herself, but also to the boy watching over her. She has her own guardian angel, this is her promise to him:

She will live her life trying to smile, even when she doesn’t feel it. She will smile because this is how he remembers her, with a smile on her face. She consoles her friends, and everyday she gets better. Not just for him, but for herself. She is free all because of those midnight dreams.
